When enough is
never enough then 'success' is a ghost
I had to take a
long break, almost 2 months. I had to think about things. I had to finish some
projects. I had to sell a house. I had to finish another book. But I am back for
those who start sending short emails “Did I unsubscribe by mistake?”
I decided to
talk today about when enough is never enough. About the ghost called ‘success'-
this manipulative word that everyone is using today without even thinking what
this means.
I am hearing
that all my life- whatever I have done or accomplished was never enough-for my
parents and later for me too. My biggest victories at school would be
acknowledged with” Hmm, you can do even better next year”!
I became the
“never satisfied overachiever”, who no matter what happens and what she does-
won’t be ever enough for me, respectively for the closest people around me.
Surprisingly
later I’ll connect my life with people who will never see my glass half full,
but half empty. They were not necessarily pessimists, I had to say.
Especially when
I am doing things that doesn’t have monetary equivalent. I was measured by the
money I produce- no matter what I do. We unfortunately are all measured by that
“uncle dollar”, sooner or later.
Finally I
became a person who will underestimate all her achievements and success and will
chase the ghost called “success” without even knowing when I am reaching it.
I’ll start a
better job. I’ll start my own business. I’ll graduate from the University. I’ll
graduate again from another University. I’ll write a book. I’ll start another
business. I’ll buy a house. I’ll have a child. Next, next, next. I don’t
remember any stops between these sentences just to take a breath.
Many of us do
the same. Success is measured by different criteria but some of us, like me
would never know when enough is enough.
Finally it is
about how we perceive ourselves and what our criteria are. So before starting
the game, set the rules. After each success, just celebrate and see where are
you going and exactly you are doing. Because as human beings most of our life
time we actually are running like (this is my favorite) “chicken with the head
cut off”.
Stop the competition with yourself, take a break
and know that you are enough. This something that can help you become enough
about who you are right now, not tomorrow.
1. Make a list of all your accomplishments
up to date
2. Make a list of what you have learned so
far
3. Make a list of what material properties
and possessions you have
4. Make a list of your friends, because
they value you for who you are now
5. Write down things that makes you feel
good and go back to them every time you have a doubt that you are
enough.
6. Know that you are enough.
